The pink square anthias is also known as the Squareback anthias, Squarespot anthias, Purple Blotch Basslet or Mirror anthias. The body of the female square anthias is predominantly yellow with a lavender belly, and often a thin blue line extending from nose to pectoral fin. Males are predominantly pink with a lavender belly and have a lighter rectangular shape on the side.
Anthias fish all share the trait of being hermaphroditic. If a dominant male perishes, it is not unheard of that one female will change and become a male.
Note: Anthias are somewhat difficult to keep healthy in captivity and so they should not be kept by inexperienced saltwater aquarists. Diet should include a variety of a steady supply of copepods, frozen mysis and vitamin enriched brine shrimp, as well as high quality flake foods 3-5 times daily.
