The Falcula Butterflyfish ( Chaetodon Falcula), also known as the Sickle Butterflyfish, or Blackwedged Butterflyfish, is a species of butterflyfish that grows to a maximum of 8 inches in the wild and to about 5-1/2 inches in captivity. The beautiful Falcula Butterflyfish is found amongst the brisk currents of the reef edge, at depths of up to 15m/49ft. A 125 gallon or larger fish-only aquarium with other butterflyfish is a good environment.
The Falcula Butterflyfish has a pale white body with three distinct black markings down its body, one across the eyes and two starting from the dorsal fins and diminishing in the interior. Thin vertical black lines run through the center body with yellow shading running along the dorsal fin to the posterior. The mouth protrudes outward and is designed for probing the smallest crevices.
Falcula Butterflyfish are best maintained in a mature fish-only set up that contains plenty of live rock. The Falcula Butterflyfish will eat anemones, hard corals, and mushroom anemones causing problems in a reef aquarium. Ideal tank-makes for Butterflyfish include Clownfish, Damsels, Gobies, Hogfish, Parrotfish and Tangs.
True Falcula Butterflyfish are carnivores and require a diet full of meaty foods. A variety of meaty foods, crustacean flesh and brine shrimp, high quality meaty frozen foods and a occasional anemone as a treat, should keep your True Falcula Butterflyfish healthy and happy.
