Harlequin Tusks require a larger aquarium due to their potential size. A tank of at least 125 gallons is recommended to provide them with ample swimming space and to accommodate their territorial nature.

2. Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: Maintain a stable temperature between 74°F and 82°F (23°C to 28°C).
  • pH Level: Keep the pH within the range of 8.1 to 8.4.
  • Salinity: The specific gravity should be around 1.020-1.025.

3. Diet: Harlequin Tusks are carnivorous and feed on a variety of marine invertebrates and small crustaceans. Offer them a diverse diet that includes high-quality frozen foods, such as Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other meaty offerings.

4. Tank Decor: Provide plenty of live rock with caves and hiding spots. Harlequin Tusks are known to hide among the rockwork, especially when they feel threatened.

5. Compatibility: Harlequin Tusks can be territorial and aggressive towards other fish, especially those of a similar size or with a similar body shape. They will prey on small fish and inverts and move corals around. They are a wonderful fish for a FOWLR (Fish Only with Live Rock) aquarium. These fish are typically shy when at a small size but will in time gain personality and confidence as they mature.

6. Disease Prevention: Quarantine new arrivals to prevent the introduction of diseases into your main tank. Regularly monitor their health and behavior.

7. Handling with Care: Be cautious when netting or handling Harlequin Tusks, as they can be aggressive and are prone to jump out of the tank if startled.

In summary, the Harlequin Tusk is a stunning fish prized for its vibrant markings. Proper care involves providing a larger tank, maintaining suitable water parameters, offering a diverse diet, and ensuring appropriate tank decor. Due to their territorial and potentially aggressive nature, it's essential to be cautious with tankmate selection and be prepared to keep them as the sole tuskfish in the aquarium.
