Snowflake Moray Eels (Echidna nebulosa), also known as Snowflake Eels or Clouded Moray Eels, are popular choices for marine aquarium enthusiasts due to their striking appearance and fascinating behavior. However, they require special care and attention to thrive in captivity. Here's a care guide to help you provide the best environment for your Snowflake Moray Eel:

Tank Setup:

  • The minimum tank size for a Snowflake Moray Eel should be at least 75 gallons. These eels can grow up to 2-3 feet in length, and they need ample space to move around.

Substrate:

  • Use a fine sand substrate, as these eels like to burrow and hide in the sand.

Water Parameters:

  • Maintain stable water conditions:
  • Temperature: 75-80°F (24-27°C)
  • Salinity: 1.023-1.025 specific gravity
  • pH: 8.1-8.4
  • Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels should be minimal. Regular water changes are crucial for keeping the water quality high.

Filtration:

  • Use a quality protein skimmer and a robust filtration system to ensure good water quality. Snowflake Moray Eels produce a lot of waste.

Lighting:

  • These eels do not require intense lighting, as they are nocturnal and will spend most of their time hiding. Dim, moonlight-style lighting can be preferable.

Hiding Places:

  • Snowflake Moray Eels are reclusive and need plenty of hiding spots. Provide them with caves, PVC pipes, or other suitable structures.

Tank Mates:

  • Choose tank mates carefully. Avoid housing Snowflake Moray Eels with small fish or invertebrates, as they may be seen as prey. Larger, aggressive tank mates are not suitable either.

Feeding:

  • Snowflake Moray Eels are carnivorous and primarily eat meaty foods. Offer a diet consisting of fresh or frozen seafood like fish, shrimp, squid, and clams.
  • Feed your eel 2-3 times a week. These eels have poor eyesight but excellent smell, so they will rely on their keen sense of smell to locate food.

Handling:

  • Snowflake Moray Eels can be aggressive and have sharp teeth, so avoid putting your hand in the tank without caution. Use long feeding tongs to offer food.

Maintenance:

  • Regular water changes are essential. Inspect the tank for debris and uneaten food that may get stuck in crevices.

Health:

  • Watch for signs of illness, which may include rapid gill movement, sores, or a refusal to eat. Quarantine new arrivals before introducing them to your main tank to prevent the spread of diseases.

Acclimation:

  • Properly acclimate your eel to its new environment by gradually introducing it to the tank's water conditions. Drip acclimation is commonly used.

Patience:

  • Snowflake Moray Eels can be shy initially and may take some time to get accustomed to their surroundings. Be patient and let them adjust at their own pace.

Remember that Snowflake Moray Eels are a long-term commitment, potentially living for 10-15 years or more in captivity. Providing them with a suitable environment and proper care will help ensure their health and well-being.
